Educated at the Universities of Cambridge and Princeton and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne—doctorate in the Institute of Chemical Physics for research on semiconductor nanoparticles. Visiting scientist at the Biocenter (Institute of Biophysics) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Szeged (1987) and the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (Laboratory of Chemical Engineering), Zürich (1993), otherwise at the Basel Biocenter (Institute of Biophysical Chemistry) and member of the Faculty of Natural Philosophy of Basel University 1994–2002. Professor and Chair of Nanotechnology at Cranfield University (UK) 2002–12. Research Director for Bionanotechnology, Cranfield University at Kitakyushu 2003–9. Founder member of the Supervisory Board of the Integrated Nano Science & Technology Exchange (INSCX) 2009–. Hon. Professor of Nanotechnology at the University of Buckingham 2012–. Author or coauthor of more than 300 research articles published in international refereed journals, has made a comparable number of conference presentations, inventor or co-inventor of three patents, has written or edited c. 12 books, chaired several international conferences, and served as visiting professor in Argentina, France, Georgia, Hungary and Japan. Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3) and a IUPAC Fellow. Chair of the Resources Strategy Group of IoM3.
